Show your grill skills

The United Reformed Church in Southern Africa plans to host an event for 400 seniors living in Athlone, later this year.

But in order to make the event a success, a number of fundraiser events will kick off from this month, to maintain the much-awaited annual celebration for seniors.

The large group of seniors will be treated to a free luncheon on Sunday 18 November, where the church will honour their legacy and thank them for their contributions in the community over the years.

“Due to economic constraints it has become increasingly difficult to maintain this beautiful gesture.

“The generous contributions of a few sponsors enabled us thus far to host this function,” explains Reverend Benjamin Nicholls.

“Our congregation will this year celebrate our 123rd birthday affirming the contributions of our elderly people over many years. To enable us to host this function we are organising a braai competition on Saturday 25 August.”

Locals who have a passion for braaing and would like to show off their skills are urged to enrol themselves for the event.

The judging and selection of the “Best Braai Master” will be done by John Grundlingh, South Africa’s 2015 Ultimate Braai Master winner.

Nicholls says a meeting will be held shortly with all participants, and to keep the public informed on the day’s activities.

The entry fee is R120 per person and prizes to the value of R2000 will be up for grabs on the day.
