“I just want to be normal again, do the things I used to do and what others are able to do.”

These are the words of a 15-year-old boy from Steenberg who feels being on crutches is depriving him of living life to the fullest like other children.

Jarred Fernandez (15), a Grade 8 learner of Steenberg High School, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2014.

Jarred is currently in remission but the aggressive treatment he received has caused his bones to be brittle, damaging both his hips and he is on crutches.

Now his mother Bridgett is pleading for help to raise funds so that her son can get a double hip operation.

The mother of two says her son Jarred needs R150 000 for the operation at Groote Schuur Hospital in May – after his last chemotherapy treatment.

“He just woke up one morning in the hospital bed and could not even stand on his legs, so he was robbed of his mobility overnight. He cannot run, walk without crutches. He can bend only to a certain extent as his reflex muscle is also damaged and that will also be reconstructed in the operation,” she says.

She says he loves soccer, “but the saddest of all for him is that he cannot play soccer anymore. If we get help for the operation he will be able to be normal again and do what he really loves.

“He interacts with children his age and participates in activity if he is able to. He also never uses his illness as an excuse. If he cannot do something, he will always try,” adds his mother.

Bridgett says if her son doesn’t get the much-needed operation he will be disabled for life and he will continuously be in tremendous pain.

They are hopeful that someone will help them out.

To help raise money a family member has created a GoGetFunding page for him.
