After 52 years the residents of Tango Crescent in Steenberg are finally getting a new sidewalk.

The sidewalk will improve the safety of children and will enhance the look of the community, says ward councillor Kevin Southgate. The sidewalk has been made possible by Southgate, using money from the ward allocation. Although work is still in progress, everything is in order to get it finished on schedule.

Southgate says work on the installation of the new sidewalk is progressing well. “It is scheduled for completion next week, weather permitting. It cost the City in the region of R100 000 which was part of the ward allocation budget for 2017/18. The City responded to the request from the community who have lived in a street for over 50 years and have never had the benefits of sidewalks,” he says.

Southgate adds that the long-awaited sidewalk will promote safety for pedestrians and children. “It will also enhance the aesthetics of the crescent. It is something that the residents have always been asking for. Many of the current residents are from the original families that moved in and they know what it was like to raise their children in a street where they were exposed to the dangers of playing in a street where there were no sidewalks, not even a kerbside.”

Southgate says that finally being able to deliver to residents who have had to wait for decades for a sidewalk leaves him with mixed feelings. “I have mixed emotions – firstly disappointed because the residents for years had to be content with what they had, and secondly happy that finally they can now enjoy what others have taken for granted,” he says.
