Sisters conned by fake flat, lose cash

2015-12-01 06:00

Claremont police need the public’s help in finding two fraudsters who took money from three sisters and promised them a flat to rent in the area.

It is alleged that one of the men overheard the sisters talking about looking for a place. He jumped into the conversation, saying he knew someone who was renting out a flat. He identified himself as Blessings.

He then took them to a flat in Claremont where they met another man who said his name was Julian. Julian said he was moving out of the flat. The sisters were then introduced to a third man, identified as Derrick the agent who was renting out the flat.

The sisters agreed to take the flat. Derrick said he needed a cash deposit to secure the place for them.

They paid R12 000 and signed a piece of paper describing the details of the transaction.

Later they were given a lease that was not for the flat they had viewed but rather a flat in Newlands. The lease is not signed.

The sisters have had no luck in getting a hold of “Derrick” since then and it has dawned on them that they have been conned.

They opened a case at the police station and now the police are appealing to members of the public to help find these men.V Anyone who knows the whereabouts of these suspects or anyone who has seen them is urged to contact the investigating officer, Constable Dominic Witbooi, on 021 299 1680 or 021 657 2279.
