Skate jam for event

2016-10-11 06:00

The Fourth Annual Strandfontein Meet Your Neighbour (MYN) event is less than a month away and this year you can expect a few changes.

Organiser Mario Oostendorp says this year he wants the event to grow.

“The quantity and quality of the exhibitors have grown since the first instalment of the MYN event. We are attracting bigger brands and quality products and exhibitors and vendors make full use of the marketing opportunity,” he says.

But this year will also host the addition of a competition for the youngsters to put their talent on show.

“At the MYN’16, we will be launching Strandfontein Skate Park’s first Skate Jam. This growing sport will be showcased by local boarders, who will partake in the skate jam.

The boarders will also host skate clinics for those interested in the now Olympic sport,” he says.

The competition is open to any competent skate boarder and registration will be open on the morning of the event.

Registration will open at 11:00 and the competition will start at 12:00.

The competition is free of charge and will work on a first come first serve basis as entries per category will be limited.

The skate jam will comprise three categories, u.14, u.18 and an open category.

The various categories will be open to all levels of experience.

“Strandfontein has many talented boarders who venture out of the area to showcase their talents at various skate jams.

“The idea is to showcase the local boarders and introduce the sport to others,” says Oostendorp.

“We have managed to secure a few quality prizes and gift vouchers from surrounding businesses.”

Participants are required to have their own board and safety equipment.

Strict no helmet, no ride applies.

The skate jam is supported by the Department of Sports and Recreation, OK Bayview, AlphaPharm, Melomed and Scorpion Security.

V The annual Meet Your neighbour event will be held on Saturday 5 November at the Strandfontein sports grounds in Spine Road and is free of charge.
