Steenvilla residents in Steenberg have taken to sleeping on the steps of the Provincial Legislature, demanding that their housing concerns be addressed.

The residents have been in and out of court as they face eviction. The battle for housing in this area has been ongoing for some time.

Steenvilla is run by Sohco Property Investments, a private non-profit company which develops and manages affordable rental accommodation.

Sohco completed the Steenvilla development between 2010 and 2014. The 700-unit complex is located adjacent to Steenberg Station.

Most of the occupants of the units are said to be in arrears with their rent, hence they are being evicted. However, community leaders at the complex say they are being treated as animals and not people. They are demanding answers to their housing problems and say they will not take the evictions “lying down”.
