Small stories pack a punch

2016-11-15 06:00

Literature in bite sizes is the idea behind a publication to make reading more accessible.

#LoveReading, a collection of blogs, articles, poems and stories by new and experienced writers all over South Africa, will be launched in Muizenberg tomorrow.

The collection, published by FunDza Literacy Trust – a local NGO that encourages reading and writing with its “library on a cellphone” – and Cover2Cover, is a natural progression from previous anthologies, says Cover2Cover’s Angela Briggs.

“Every week a new story is loaded by a South African writer, and there are also many blogs, poems, and stories by young professional writers, as well as readers who send in their work. In the past Cover2Cover has published FunDza short stories in anthologies called Big Ups.

“But there is so much other interesting stuff in FunDza’s library, little bite-sized pieces to entice people into reading, that FunDza and Cover2Cover decided to launch a new anthology with a variety of texts,” she says.

For most of the writers, this is the first time they have had their work in print.

And two of FunDza’s staff members’ work appears on the pages. Ndibulele Sotondoshe, who is a FunDdza writer, has a poem, an article on blessers and two interviews in the book. Nandi Tshabane wrote a blog about growing up gay.

There are also numerous other young writers who feature in the collection, with work on topics such as the student protests, overcoming anxiety and a variety of social topics.

Popular piecesThe pieces were chosen because of their popularity on the FunDza mobisite, explains Briggs.

“They are all tried and tested and have come out with flying colours. Readers comment on the stories and articles, so we know what is popular,” she says.

“The aim of this collection is to provide reading pleasure to South Africans. There are also discussion questions on each piece so it can be used in reading groups or even schools.”

V The #LoveReading collection is available at or at Cover2Cover’s offices at 85 Main Road, Muizenberg.
