Soccer played all year

Asynthetic pitch will be installed in Ocean View over the next three years.

Although lighting has been installed around the area at the Ocean View Sport Complex, the design will only be completed in the next financial year and the pitch installed in the 2017/2018 financial year.

Mayoral committee member for community services and special projects Belinda Walker says the pitch will be dedicated to soccer and can accommodate more activity as it requires less maintenance.

“The number of soccer clubs is on the increase and there is a constant demand for use of the field. This impacts on the state of the field, wearing out the grass, so more maintenance is required to meet the minimum maintenance standards,” she says.

Ocean View Football Club secretary Earl Cloete says this pitch will reduce water usage and more clubs can be accommodated.

“We need to train over 200 kids on a 50m by 50m piece of field. We have three schools, each with three football teams, and many times they cannot use the field for games as clubs utilise the suggested eight-hour usage per week set out by the City,” he says.

With the synthetic pitch, the field will be able to accommodate more activity over longer hours throughout the year with less maintenance demands, Walker says.

The pitch will also ensure that sport can be played throughout the year, she says.

The installation of the synthetic pitch will allow for long term usage.

“It will be a great motivation in the sense of bringing the youth together on a greater basis. More controlled community games can take place and having more smaller games take place will make the sports complex a great hub for the community.”
