Boys playing soccer at Plantation Road Primary School in Ottery will be able to have better control over the ball after they had soccer boots donated to them last week.

The school’s coordinator of sports, Mervyn Amos, received the boots from Mohammed Patel, the regional manager of Ackermans.

“Two months ago Marwaan May, my very close friend, saw the need for soccer boots at my school. He then went ahead and spoke to some people he knows and so the ball started rolling.

“I then got an email from Collette Apolles (who works for Ackermans) informing me that we will be getting 30 pairs of boots and Mr Mohammed (Patel) would be dropping them off. I was so happy for the boys because for some of them it will be the first time they get new boots,” says Amos.

May helps Amos to manage the school’s soccer teams when they compete in various tournaments.

“Sometimes he buys the food out of his own pocket so the kids can eat for the whole day,” adds Amos, who says that he and May often reminisce about their days together on the playing field.

“He told me once ‘my bru, remember our young days, Mr Appels would have been very proud of us’. Sayed Appels was our coach, dad, mentor, ‘alles’ at Milano United. So I am just trying to give back to any kid, because I got the same treatment or better from Mr Appels and Majiet Dreyer, another one of our coaches that played a big part in our lives,” says Amos.

Plantation Road Primary School principal, Cedric Meyer, was extremely grateful for the donation.

“To Mr Mohammed Patel and Ackermans and Marwaan May, thank you very, very much – I really appreciate what you did for our school, Plantation Primary.
