A 16-year-old girl from Athal Walk in Hanover Park is set and ready to represent her country in an international girls’ soccer tournament in the United States of America in March (“Get behind a star”, Peoples Post, 28 November).

Tasneem Cookson, who took to the media to raise funds for the trip, has finally managed to cover her travel and accommodation costs of R26 000 with the help of her family, friends and community.

The tournament, known as the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup, is one of the oldest and most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the USA.

Her proud mother, Shireen Wilson, says the family held a range of fundraisers within the short period of time and will do anything and everything to see their daughter achieve her goals.

“Tasneem is grateful to everyone for their help.

“She is beyond excited for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and can’t wait to go and show off her soccer skills representing IKAPA United,” she says.

Wilson adds that there are still other girls and boys struggling with funds for their trip and the community’s help would be greatly appreciated.

V Anyone who would like to assist the team players with funds is asked to call the Ikapa United project manager, Richard Poole, on 071 965 7512.
