Walking away from his 10 years’ experience at a local restaurant to embark on a solo journey has opened even bigger doors for Greg Bax of the Rare Grill eatery in Kenilworth.

He recently won a Best Steakhouse award at the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries Awards.

The winners were announced in Cape Town on Thursday 18 October after a year-long voting period and adjudication
process.

“I decided to venture out into the big bad world on my own and live my dream,” Bax says.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, he says: “Everyone appreciates recognition for their efforts. For me personally, it means we are doing the right thing and are thoroughly enjoying ourselves in the process. Not just from a product and service perspective, but that those working with me are also
growing.”

Bax says his secret to success is maintaining a culture of good service, making his place feel like a home, and the continuous empowerment of his staff.

Within his short time of being an entrepreneur, Bax says it is not all about profits but also making a difference.

He partnered with the City of Cape Town’s Street People Programme along with other stakeholders, particularly at the new Culemborg Safe Space for Street People which opened recently.

“All involved have done an amazing job in this initiative. We look forward to a long relationship with them. They (the homeless at Culemborg) are a special group of people.”

Linda Scarborough, editor of Eat Out, says this year the easy-to-use Eat Out app made reviewing easy.

“After a year-long voting period and adjudication process, the top eateries in each category were, in conjunction with scoring from professional Eat Out critics, determined by public ratings received via the Eat Out app and website (eatout.co.za). We love reading about users’ dining experiences, and look to their star ratings to determine the shortlist. Our professional critics also review each eligible restaurant to determine the final winners in a 50-50 composite score.”
