Rondebosch soprano Siphamandla Yakupa will be joining rock heavyweight Arno Carstens on stage at the Nederburg Picnic Pops concert this weekend.

They’ll be joined by tenor Lukhanyo Moyake, jazz singer Adelia Douw, the Boland Community Choir and the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, conducted by Brandon Phillips, on Saturday.

The annual benefit concert aims to showcase young and emerging musicians on a platform where they get the opportunity to share the stage with more recognised names.

Siphamandla believes established artists should be doing more to be helping the next generation of musicians.

“I think upcoming musicians need more information from experienced artists with regard to furthering your career in a foreign country and how you should market yourself as an individual.”

Although she was always singing at school, the Cape Town Opera staff soloist’s singing career started when she decided to do her undergraduate study in Opera Performance.

Since then she’s had the privilege of singing with one of the world’s most sought-after performers, Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, when he toured South Africa last year.

“When you hear that you’ll be performing with a big star like Bryn, a lot of things go through your mind.”

Siphamandla wondered what kind of person he would be and whether he’d be easy to work with, but her apprehensions were soon laid to rest.

“Bryn was not only amazing on stage but off stage as well; very funny and always willing to offer advice.”

Another one of her career highlights is singing the role of Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.

“It was such a welcome challenge to do as the role is not only mentally and vocally challenging, but physically as well.”

Although she has many favourites, Siphamandla is a big fan of Puccini and dreams of one day playing the title role in his Suor Angelica.

“I love Puccini’s music . . . all the lines, the emotion and intensity are just amazing.”

Apart from preparing for her performance on Saturday, Siphamandla is also learning new music for Cape Town Opera’s upcoming productions and expanding her solo repertoire so she can enter more competitions and auditions next year.

The audience can look forward to her renditions of famous arias from La Traviata and Die Fledermaus at the picnic concert.

The concert starts at 18:00, but gates open at 16:00 and families are encouraged to bring snacks and enjoy the afternoon sun.V Tickets cost R100 each from and children under 12 enter free. Tickets will also be on sale at the gate on the day. Visit or call 021 809 8412 during office hours for more information.
