It started a few years ago when a special young girl was placed in the care of a local community worker.

“I always said I wanted to give her a 21st, if she was still with me. When the day came, I asked for help. We are so grateful to everyone that made it happen,” says Diane van Rooyen, Shakiena’s foster mother.

Around a month before her birthday at the beginning of April, van Rooyen approached community worker Joanie Fredericks to assist in honouring this milestone.

“She said to me that she really wanted to give her a 21st but was not able to afford it. I immediately put the word out on social media and the amazing friends I have gave in abundance. The party was short of nothing,” says Fredericks.

In the end, two birthday cakes, savouries, sweets, cooldrinks and even two party dresses made this moms’ dream a reality for the girl she has grown to love as her own.

“Over the years I have met many, many of these earthly angels and (today) I want to take time out to say thank you to all of them, they know who they are and specifically for those who helped me make Shakiena’s 21st birthday party possible,” says Fredericks.

She thanks Wendy-Lynn and Malcom Almacin, Celeste April, Jasmine Page, Deborah Warmington, Priscilla Maart, Mel and Ferouza Smythe who assisted in the
arrangements.

“Thank you to the many, many other angels who could not contribute this time for your wonderful warm wishes and your good vibes. On behalf of Shakiena and her foster mom Diane and the community of Freedom Park, thank you very, very much. May the Lord bless you and keep you,” says
Fredericks.

“May he restore and transform you and your loved ones every day. May the lord bless you personally and may you feel his touch when he inspire you to keep on giving. May your businesses and plans for future businesses be blessed in every single way.”

Her party was held at the Freedom Park Community Hall on Saturday 14 April.
