The St George’s Anglican Church hall in Bridgetown was awash with red and white on Thursday 14 February as members of the Blossoms Senior Club gathered to celebrate Valentine’s Day.But the day was not only about celebrating love, but also to give thanks for the strength and dedication shown. The club celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and hopes to continue spreading joy to fellow elders every year.

Sarah Daniels has been chairperson of the Blossom Senior Club since 2004.

“The work that we do, we are not an arts and crafts club, we go out into the communities. When we see they are hungry, we will always come together to buy things and then take it to them,” said Daniels.

Every year, the group of seniors puts together a group who visits different communities outside Cape Town to conduct an outreach programme.

“Last year we went to Knysna to an old aged home over there. It is always heartbreaking to see old people who sit there and cry. The children do not even come near to the parents or nobody comes to visit them, that is very sad to see them neglected. We also went to a children’s home, and as I got out of the bus I cried when I saw these children. I was also glad that we went there. This year we are going away to Brenton-on-Sea. I always call ahead before we plan our trip, to ask who or where the need is mostly,” she said.

Joan Mary Booysen has been a member of the club for three years and is grateful for the positive impact it has had on her life.

“When I first joined, I was very emotional due to the things I had to go through, but here at the club I was healed. This is a club which stands by each other, we laugh together, cry together and enjoy everything together,” she said, adding that their weekly meetings on Thursdays uplift her spirits.

“We sing choruses, we pray for the sick and we pray for our community, because we know that so many things are happening in our community. We support and love each other, and we look forward to seeing each other every week and it is a pleasure to belong to the Blossom Senior Club. I am thankful to Aunty Sarah for handling this club so well. Everything that has been done here has been well done,” said Booysen.

Daniels said the Valentine’s Day event is only one of many planned for the rest of the year.

“This year’s event fell on the day we normally have our meetings (Thursdays). We are 55 members in the club, because we lost a member a few weeks ago. We are preparing a lot of things, we want to do a lot of things, but sometimes the time is not there. Everyone is excited about it. When I joined the club there were only seven people. We went up to 100 members at one stage. I can’t miss this club because I am very fond of these people, I love them.

“The Blossom Senior Club means a lot to me.”
