Children will be kept busy at the seaside this week with the return of the fun-filled Aqua Day.

The event will be held by the Strandfontein Facilities Management Committee (FMC) and local youth and community organisation 9Miles Project tomorrow (Wednesday 20).

The free event is open to children between the ages of 10 and 15 in the Strandfontein and surrounding areas.

The initial event was in 2014 and again in 2016. Funded by the Strandfontein FMC and the City of Cape Town, activities are provided by 9Miles Project.

Going forward, the organisers would like to host it twice a year, says Carmen Davids of the 9Miles Project.

“The Strandfontein FMC is a body that comprises all the sports codes and facilities management teams within the Strandfontein area.

Since no aquatic codes were represented on the FMC they initially approached 9Miles Project to offer some water-based activities since it was summer and they are situated so close to the beach.

“The aim was to create positive and wholesome activities for youth, and keep them active and out of trouble during the school holidays,” says Davids.

Activities planned for the event will be kayaking, surfing, a lifesaving demonstration, environmental lessons, beach soccer, volleyball, and much more. Food and drinks will also be on offer.

All activities will be expertly supervised and children must take along their swimming costumes, a towel, a bottle of water, a sun hat, and sunblock.

Pre-registration is advised.

“[These activities] were selected because they are activities which best showcase and utilise the beautiful space at Strandfontein Pavilion Tidal Pool. It includes activities which are already offered by 9Miles Project as part of their public life empowerment and surf clinics,” says Davids.

Free bus transport will also run from 07:00 along the following points:

  • Stop 1: Rocklands (Total Garage)
  • Stop 2: Bayview (Baptist tent)
  • Stop 3: OK Mini Market (Bayview)
  • Stop 4: Gamza’s Fish Den
  • Stop 5: Wadjieds Tikka Chicken
  • Stop 6: Strandfontein Library
  • Stop 7: BP Garage
  • Stop 8: Strandfontein Sports Field

A second trip will also pick up children in Camp Road and Pelican Park.
