Sports hall secured

2018-03-06 06:01

Vandalism at the Ocean View Sports Complex is a growing concern, says local councillor Pat Francke. This after a series of incidents at the public facility, which have resulted in broken windows and other damages.

In response to the ongoing vandalism, the City of Cape Town is looking to beef up security at the sports complex.

Mayco member (South) Eddie Andrews says around a dozen incidents of vandalism at the facility have been reported over the last three years.

“Electrical damage (stolen cables), broken windows, damaged burglar bars, the theft of taps, light fixtures and recreational equipment, and damage and theft of spray-park cables, wiring and fixtures [are some of the damages caused by the vandalism],” says Andrews.

“Between 2015 and 2018, damage to the value of R122 000 has been reported. This excludes the most recent vandalism, as the damage has not yet been calculated in this instance.”

The vandalism comes despite a series of upgrades to the facility, which have taken place over this three-year period, Andrews says. The upgrades total around R720 000.

“All windows were repaired and all affected equipment at the spray-park was repaired in 2015. Six months later it was vandalised again,” he says.

“When vandalism occurs the community is unable to utilise the hall or the clubhouse to their full extent.”

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has requested additional security for the property, Andrews says.

“This includes the further hardening of the facility through the stone barring of windows. It should be noted that further hardening and additional security is not a guarantee to prevent vandalism and theft.

“The community needs to take responsibility for community facilities and value them as a resource. It is only when communities do this that facilities are valued and looked after.”

V Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of vandalism to the City’s emergency 107 line. The caller will be transferred to the relevant emergency service provider. Dial 107 from a Telkom line or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.
