He will complete his trade test to become qualified in spray painting only next week, but already he can be lauded as the “best spray painter in Cape Town”.
Kyle Johnson (24) from Grassy Park recently took part in his first international spray painting competition and managed to kick dust in his competitors’ eyes and finished in fourth place.

“It all started when a guy, who supplies paint for the company I work for, recommended that I go for paint matching courses. Eventually I went to the course and the lecturer at these courses suggested I should enter the R-M Best Painter Contest, because he saw my work and said it was good,” Johnson explains.

At first, Johnson says, he did not even know how to enter the competition but with help he was entered for the competition that only takes place every three years.
Johnson was one of six finalists from South Africa.

“I was selected as the only one from Cape Town to go through to the finals that took place in Johannesburg from 1 to 3 February. This was my first competition and also my first time travelling,” Johnson beams.

Asked about his four-day trip he says it was a “great experience”.
“I went there and I didn’t know what to expect because I have never entered any competitions like this before. It was really organised and they made me feel welcome. I met people who were eager to meet me, because they had seen my work and I didn’t know them,” he says.
He couldn’t be more proud of himself and his results in the competition, which was held at the Refinish Competence Centre in Johannesburg.

“The people I competed against were back already for their second and third time in the competition and I beat them. This really made me feel good about my work and I am definitely looking forward to take part in the next competition.”

Johnson, who currently works at Nortons Auto Services in Retreat, says he is very positive about his career.
“To finish fourth in the competition representing South Africa, and not being qualified yet but competing against qualified spray painters, was definitely a great experience for me. I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m glad I took part in the competition,” he says.

He walked away with a Scangrip colour match kit which allows one to match paint colours.

Johnson says he looks forward to qualifying after completing his trade test through Merseta next week.
“I just have to study hard now,” Johnson says.
R-M hosted its 12th edition of the International Best Painter Contest in September last year.
The competition is open to painters under thirty years old using R-M’s Onyx HD waterborne paints.
