Spreading festive cheer

Following the success of their Ramadan collection drive, a local organisation is at it again, this time to bring festive joy to 150 children in and around the area.

With two homes already identified, Shaqeel Dareis and Shinaaz Adjiet of Precious Gems are now calling on residents to assist them in donating festive boxes to children.

Some of the clothing donated through the Ramadan initiative is being distributed as part of this drive (“Hijab for happiness”, People’s Post, 10 April).

“We want to thank everyone who donated to the scarf drive because they have allowed us to donate the clothing to the homes,” says Adjiet.

The bags of clothing are currently being processed and washed by a local laundry, Westgate Laundry Services, free of charge, they say.

“We cannot thank them enough,” says Adjiet.

Dareis says they are also calling for donations of toiletries, toys, luxuries, clothing and a gift for the children who stay at local orphanage, Elonwabeni Child and Family Centre.

The dontations will also go to Solomon’s Haven, a safe haven for abused children in New Woodlands.

“These children have needs and we have already started giving them from the clothing that was donated through our Ramadan drive,” says Adjiet.

“We are hoping to give to at least 150 children this festive season.

“The cut-off date for donations is Monday 10 December because we want to distribute everything by that date,” says Dareis.

“We are also asking that people give us good quality secondhand clothing that is fit for human use.”

The children range between the ages of six months and 19 years.

“I want to give to all children, from any religion, because all children need things,” says Adjiet.

According to the slogan of the organisation, they aim to bring hope, love and light to residents. They also have specific ages and clothing sizes of children, should residents want to donate a full box.

Donations of any of the items in any quantities will also be accepted and appreciated.

Other donations needed are food items toward a Christmas party and day-to-day needs of the homes, Dareis and Adjiet state. V There are drop-off points in Lansdowne, Athlone, Colorado Park and Bayview. For more information, call Shinaaz Adjiet on 082 575 6129 or Shaqeel Dareis on 084 853 9717.
