Hundreds of residents have joined together to keep their streets clean.

Initiated by the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum, the initiative was aimed at getting residents to take ownership of their streets, fighting crime and litter.

CPF chairperson Sandy Schuter says it was about community engagement and residents made the project their own.

“We wanted to change people’s mindsets and fight crime in a new way. People have become so excited that it has carried on this weekend. We wanted them to have a new respect that the place was cleaned and so that they could keep it clean,” she says.

The residents did their own streets and projects.

Residents also took “before” and “after” images of the clean-up to assist in the selection of areas that need sprucing up.

Businesses and residents also contributed with the assistance of Expanded Public Works Programme workers, law enforcement units and residents lending a hand.

“It has had an effect on residents who are now even painting their own houses. If you clean your house, you can clean your street and then adopt a park and then that way the whole area will be clean,” says Schuter.
