Spurs women nailed Virgo women 1-0 in an electrifying Sasol Cape Town regional women’s league fixture played in Rocklands on Sunday.

With home advantage, the hosts failed to keep authority of the game and allowed the visitors to scalp the much-needed three points.

After a goalless first half, the visitors gained strength when Maneecia Martin scored for them after she volleyed a powerful ball past the helpless host goalkeeper.

Southern Stars were forced into a 2-2 draw against Portia United in their derby match played at Loerie Park Stadium on Saturday.

In an evenly poised encounter, the hosts were caught off guard after Andisiwe Bangani gave Portia United a lead in the first 10 minutes.

The visitors held the upper hand in the game and soon after Nomthandaza Khubheka doubled their lead when she netted home from a solo attack.

Instead of maintaining the pressure, the visitors allowed the hosts to regroup and salvage a valuable point.

The hero for the hosts was Andisiwe Feni, who netted twice for her team.

Safa regional women’s league

UCT demolished Ambassadors 3-0 in a Safa Cape Town regional women’s league match played at UCT on Friday night. The students kept their nerves while the visitors’ strikers squandered valuable opportunities.

The strength of the students was too great for a lacklustre diplomatic core team that crumbled in the second half.

The students, with their international contingent, were unstoppable after Burundian defender Gretta Sindayihebura broke the deadlock with a stunning goal.

Ginny Somers, the American winger, outran the feeble diplomats’ defence and scored from another student attack.

The current log leaders were in full command of the game as the visitors were too weak. Nemo Mgugulwa, the students’ prolific striker, caused more frustrations after she netted a superb goal.

Phoenix Spurs women were forced into a 1-1 draw against CPUT in their backyard at Rygate sports complex on Sunday. The hosts were attacking, gaining momentum while the visitors were stunned and at stages were mere spectators.

Jamie-lee Motlatsi, a hardworking Phoenix striker, scored minutes before half time.

With the pressure on the hosts to secure the victory, they allowed the visitors a slight window of opportunity.

Athini Klaas netted the much-needed goal for the students in the 72nd minute.
