‘Stand together’ against

2018-10-09 06:01

Lotus River residents are urged to join hands for two hours in solidarity against gangsterism and child trafficking on Saturday 13 October from 10:00.

Ward 65 councillor Patricia van der Ross says the application for the march has been approved and it will take place across major intersections which surround her ward.

“We are covering major intersections from Fifth Avenue, Old Strandfontein Road to Klip Road to Buck Road to Zeekoe Road and Lake Road and all the avenues from First to Fifth Avenue within the boundaries of the ward. We are just requesting that everybody just comes out and puts up a stand there for two hours, forming a human chain in solidarity against the gangsterism and child trafficking,” says Van der Ross.

The movement was initiated by a resident in Lotus River who approached Van der Ross and had an emergency meeting, which took place at the Lotus River Community Hall last month (“Residents rise up against gangsterism”, People’s Post, 11 September). Neighbourhood watches, police and Law Enforcement authorities will be assisting with the operations on the day of the event, but Van der Ross says the day will not be fruitful without residents standing up.

“We are mainly dependent on the community to stand together. We don’t want our ward to stay the same. We don’t want Lotus River to feel that gangsters are taking over. This is our Lotus River. We grew up here, we know what it was like and we want to take it back to that part where it was safe to walk around. It was safe to go from place to place, it was safe to go to go play in the park, and it was safe to have fun without feeling scared to get robbed or attacked. We want that back,” says Van der Ross.
