Station listed in top 30

The Mitchell’s Plain Police Station has been listed third in the top 30 over all for the 17 crime categories having reported 11 382 cases.

This was revealed with the recent release of the official national crime statistics for the 2017/18 year.

The station placed first for sexual assault, malicious damage to property, contact related crimes and common assault. They placed second for all thefts not mentioned elsewhere and attempted murder, third in community reported crime and contact crimes, fifth for shoplifting and common robbery and sixth for arson and other serious crime. The station also placed 10th for robbery with aggravated circumstances, 12th for murder, 13th for house burglaries, 14th for property related crimes, 15th for sexual offences and 16th for theft out of motor vehicles.

The People’s Post Mitchell’s Plain edition distribution area covers five of the eight cluster stations. There statistics are as follows­:

Mitchell’s Plain

There was an increase in murders, sexual offences, assault GBH, sexual assault, attempted sexual offences, carjacking, house robberies, business robberies, commercial crime and shoplifting, with the most significant increase in attempted murders at 70% from 144 cases in 2016/17 to 246 cases in 2017/18.

Crime categories showing a decrease include property related crimes, contact crimes, contact-related crimes and other serious crimes. Arrests as a result of police action also saw an increase 3% with 275 arrests for illegal gun possession, 4930 for drug crimes and 192 for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Lentegeur

There was an increase in sexual offences, attempted murder, sexual assault, contact sexual offences, attempted sexual offences, car jacking, business robbery, cash in transit heists, vehicle theft, shoplifting and all theft not mentioned with the most significant increase (116%) in arson with 13 cases reported.

Crime categories showing a decrease include contact crimes, contact related crimes, property related crimes and other serious crimes. A total of 3029 arrests were made as a result of police action.

Strandfontein

Strandfontein saw increases in murder, sexual offences, attempted murder (100% from 2 cases to 4 cases), common robbery, robbery with aggravated circumstances, rape, business robbery, malicious damage to property, commercial crime and shoplifting.

There was a decrease in the contact crimes, subcategories of aggravated robbery, property-related crime and other serious crime categories. The precinct also decreased in the number of arrests as a detection of police action from 640 in 2016/17 to 474 this year.

Philippi

Philippi saw the most significant increase in business robbery at 130% as a result of 23 cases registered as apposed to 10 last year.

There were also increases in murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, rape, sexual assault, carjacking, stock theft, commercial crime and shoplifting.

Overall category decreases include contact-related crime, property-related crime and other serious crimes.

There was also a decrease in the number of arrests made as a result of police action, from 2092 arrests in 2016/17 to 1985 arrests in 2017/18. There was, however, an increase in driving under the influence and illegal gun possession arrests.

Grassy Park

The Grassy Park Police Station saw increases in murder, assault GBH, robbery with aggravated circumstances, carjacking, cash in transit heists (one case), theft of vehicles, stock theft (one case), commercial crime and shoplifting with the most significant increase in business robbery (87%) with 43 cases reported in the time period.

There were overall decreases in the contact crime, sexual offences, property-related crimes and other serious crimes categories­.

There was an overall increase in arrests as a result of police action with 475 more arrests made. For the year, police arrested 51 people for possession of firearms, 2251 for drug crimes, 101 for driving under the influence and six for sexual offences, a total of 2409 arrests as opposed to 1952 the previous year.
