Children at Springdale Primary School benefitted from a generous donation of 200 stationery packs.

Mayor Dan Plato visited the Lentegeur school on Monday 3 February to hand out the packs to Grade R and 1 learners.

The initiative forms part of the mayor’s outreach programme. A number of schools have been identified to receive 200 packs of the stationery for those who could do with extra tools for learning. The pack consists of a colouring book, crayons and pencils, among other items.

“This is an important initiative as I’ve often said that education is the best way for young people to access their potential. Having the right tools is essential to learning, especially for learners in the foundation phase who are starting their school life where many vital skills are learned,” says Plato.

Plato also called on the private sector to join the initiative so more learners may be able to benefit from this initiative.

Plato was accompanied by ward 76 councillor Goawa Timm and member of provincial parliament Ricardo Mackenzie. “The mayor knows that many of our communities are suffering and many parents are unable to afford stationery and school fees. As the member of parliament for Mitchell’s Plain, I am happy that the mayor chose a school in the area. I know that this will go a long way to enable the kids’ learning,” says Mackenzie.

“Stationery plays a very important role in a child’s education. As a parent myself I know that activities almost always require scissors, glue, colouring stationery, pens, pencils and I know some learners at times feel left out. They can now all participate and I am hopeful that this will bring out more doctors, lawyers, police officers and teachers in Mitchell’s Plain.”
