Stellenbosch Football Club finished third on the national first division log after the team secured a valuable three points.

They narrowly beat their archrivals, Santos, 1-0 in a tough derby played at Coetzenberg Stadium in Stellenbosch on Sunday.

Stellenbosch now qualifies for the promotional playoffs scheduled for after the current season. This encounter was tense with what was once the people’s team Santos doomed for relegation.

Edries Burton, former Bafana Bafana midfielder, says his team, Stellenbosch, are here to make an impact and to let the Cape Town flag rise again as a city of excellent soccer. For Santos this was another poor display. They now have a bleak future as a team that was once the mighty but has fallen below its illustrious record, being former champions of the PSL.

Mame Niang scored for the winelands team from the penalty spot.

Stellenbosch are now on the brink of promotion into the PSL.

Chief operations officer of Stellenbosch FC Burton hailed the victory as another milestone for his club.
