After staring defeat in the face, defending champions Stephanian-Ottery clawed their way back to a 2-1 victory against RC Athletico in the Cape District LFA super and premier league knockout cup final at the William Herbert sports complex on Saturday.

With RC Athletico leading 1-0 for the greatest part of the match, coach Mervyn Hawyn’s Stephs side fought back gallantly as they turned the game on its head, scoring twice within the final ten minutes.

RC Athletico opened their account through striker Tasleem Paulse, who latched onto a cross from Muneeb Mohamed and blasted it into the empty net.

RC Athletico did well up until the 80th minute of play when Jeremy Cyster scored the equalising goal.

Then eight minutes later RC Athletico’s goalkeeper Lucien Edgar brought down ­Cyster. Referee Armien Ganief did not hesitate and awarded a penalty to Stephs, which Edwardo September converted.

RC Athletico’s coach Nathi Mantu felt a lapse in concentration brought on his team’s defeat.

“We fell short, made mistakes and buckled under pressure,” he said afterwards.

Woodlands United beat Lentegeur Leeds 3-2 on penalties to capture the Mitchell’s Plain LFA champions league knockout cup at Westridge Oval after the score was level at 2-2.

Super/premier league: Stephanian-Ottery 2, RC Athletico 1.

First league: Grassy Park United 1, Salt River Blackpool 0.

Second league: Grassy Park United 3, Ashford Athletic 0.

Over-40 league: Wesley United 5, Stephanian-Ottery 2.

Over-35 league: Greenwood Athletic 1, Ocean View 0.

U.18: Glendene United 5, Southampton 3 (penalties, 1-1).

U.16: Greenwood Athletic 4, Spenston 3 (penalties, 2-2).

U.14: Stephanians-Ottery 1, Southampton 0.

U.12: Glendene United 2, Grassy Park United 1.

U.10: Eagle Wings 1, Southampton 0.

Mitchell’s Plain LFA:

Champions league: Woodlands United 3, Leeds Lentegeur 2 (penalties, 2-2).

Super league: Bayhill United 4, Fulham 2.
