‘Stop stealing from the dead’

2018-04-24 06:01

About a while back, a former pupil and I visited the graves of her dad and other relatives, at the Islamic burial grounds in Johnston Road, Athlone.

A sweet gentleman who saw us with metal picket fences we had brought with us to surround the plots, as the concrete on the top of the graves had been stolen, said while it was a thoughtful gesture, it would again be stolen very quickly. How low has our society sunk that people steal from the dead, from the area in which they are buried?

Having been told that the area’s upkeep does not fall under the auspices of the council, I was wondering if any kind community-minded security company would please come forward to fix the walls and maybe raise them further to further deter miscreants.

If anyone would like to help, please email me on ellen76seven@gmail.com
