Two families were left homeless and hundreds more were left with beds and blankets to dry out in Kensington, Maitland, Observatory and other areas after the mother of all storms hit Cape Town last week.

The storm left a number of people injured and eight dead across the province.

Though there have been no reports of blown shacks in the informal settlements in Kensington, the roof of the Dawood family’s home in Bunny Street was blown off in the early hours, forcing them to go stay with neighbours.

Traffic in most of the streets in the neighbourhood was affected as broken trees blocked some of the streets.

In 10th Street a pool of water flooded the street.

In Observatory, councillor Paddy Chapple says, there was no major damage and no injuries but streetlights were out until Thursday morning. He says electricity cables were also snapped.
