A number of homes and businesses in Claremont, Kenilworth and Mowbray were severely affected by the heavy storm that hit the province last Wednesday.

Thousands of people spent the early hours of the morning without electricity and wires and poles were reportedly badly damaged by the strong winds.

However, no injuries and deaths were reported in these areas.

In Claremont the busy mall, Cavendish Square, was forced to close for hours after parts of the complex were damaged. Cavendish Road was closed in the afternoon as the visibility was affected by billboards which had come loose.

In Kenilworth residents complained of traffic lights not working and tree branches blocking traffic on the roads.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Lindile Dubeni said it was necessary for some of the roads to be closed to avoid possible accidents.

In Mowbray the police station was flooded and police, with the assistance of the disaster risk management in the area, had to clear some of the offices and move important documentats to safe storage at the station.
