A group of 60 student designers from UCT joined hands to encourage the public to support local clothing brands as they took to the stage to showcase their work at Memorial Hall, UCT Upper Campus, on Saturday 22 September.

The event was held in line with the Awear SA Fashion Show started by tertiary students as part of the Wear SA Movement under the theme #SAKotini.

UCT is reportedly following in the footsteps of other neighbouring universities that have hosted their own version of Awear SA.

According to the organisers, Awear SA goes beyond just supporting local designers – it is a movement that promotes the importance of supporting locally manufactured products whether they are fashion related or not.

The fashion shows they hold create a platform for students to show their talent and promote their brands, exposing them to the market. The proceeds from ticket sales will go towards “assisting students on campus – study related.”

Wayne van der Rheede, director of the Wear SA Festival, says: “These incredible young people have all worked so hard in the middle of the build-up to the event and of course, their local fashion industry. It’s a fun event, with loads of entertainment as well as beautiful fashion.”

Van der Rheede says to be in the industry, one has to have talent, good timing and tenacity.

Student Keketso Ramaisa says it has been an honour for him to be part of an innovative initiative that equips aspiring entrepreneurs with skills and gives them exposure to the real world.
