The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town hosted its first Student Code of Ethics ceremony for first and second year LLB students on Friday 24 May.

A total of 67 students pledged to the Faculty of Law to conduct themselves in an ethical manner in preparation for their careers in law. The ceremony officially inducts first-year law students into the IIE’s Faculty of Law. According to a statement sent out by the college, this entrenches the fundamental value of ethics in the legal profession in law students from first year level where they pledge to uphold the dignity and integrity of the legal profession, the reputation of the Faculty of Law of the IIE and the values entrenched in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act 108 of 1996.

Democratic Alliance’s shadow minister of Justice, Glynnis Breytenbach encouraged students to never compromise their integrity and reiterated how much South Africa needs ethical members of the law.

Breytenbach says: “Honesty, integrity and ethics will set you apart.”

Fiona Kaplan, Head of School of Law, says: “The ceremony is a wonderful platform for an eminent member of the profession to address our LLB students on the importance of ethics. Furthermore, the ceremony is an important milestone in the students’ study of law, to reflect on what it means to be a “fit and proper person.”
