The magic of running a city marathon was the topic of discussion for a group of excited athletes who attended a public talk at Nantes Athletics Club in Athlone on Tuesday evening.

The club’s premises, located at Vangate Sports Grounds, directly opposite Vantage Mall, drew in more than 100 locals on the day.

The event was hosted in preparation for the annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon taking place in September.

Guest speakers included Elana van Zyl Meyer – an expert in the sports fraternity. Meyer is one of South Africa’s top sports icons and is celebrated for her record-breaking achievements and contributions to the country’s sporting industry.

She happily shared with the crowd some of her marathon experiences from across the world, and encouraged participants, both young and old, to own this year’s city marathon.

“The annual marathon is almost on our doorstep. The aim of the programme was to motivate our team who are doing the marathon this year, and especially the beginner athletes to take on the 10km challenge,” explains Fadia Roberts, spokesperson for Nantes Athletics Club.

Members of the club took down notes as the evening went by and enjoyed several other activities which included a demonstration on the styles of running and the importance of core training by sports expert Jacques van Zyl.

Caroline Peters, chairperson of PUR was also present to give input.

“It was an informative session and despite having a Soccer World Cup game airing on television at the time of the talk, we still had a full house. This just proves our love for running at Nantes Athletics Club.

“We are thankful to the guest speakers and all those who contributed,” says Roberts.
