St Paul’s Primary School principal Yeye Mgudlwa had tears rolling down her cheeks after a surprise donation was received by the school on Thursday.

Staff at the school held a special event for what they believed would be the donation of funds to cover the school fees of two Grade R learners, by a former volunteer and resident of the US Virgin Islands, Resa O’Reilly.

O’Reilly volunteered at the Bo-Kaap school in February, and vowed to raise funds through her charity, Project Promise, in the Virgin Islands, to fund the schooling of two learners.

“I fell in love with these children,” she said at the handover.

“I arrived home on the Monday, and by the Tuesday I had raised the funds [for two learners]. So I decided to keep on going and raised enough to pay for 30 learners.”

O’Reilly handed over a cheque for over R123 000 to the school at the event.

Mgudlwa responded to the donation with tears of joy, saying: “ Thank you, thank you. I’m speechless. You have taken the school to new levels.”

Mgudlwa added that many children at the school come from townships and that the school struggles for resources.

“God has sent one of his angels in Sister Resa,” Mgudlwa added.

“[O’Reilly is] the only volunteer who decided to make a difference to our learners like this.”
