Kensington police have arrested a 28-year-old suspect for armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm in Factreton today (Friday 18 August) at around 11:00.

The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at a taxi driver and robbed him off his money and cell phone.

He was arrested on the corner of Glider Crescent and Acre Street after police received a tip-off about his whereabouts from a witness.

Kensington police spokesperson, Sergeant Angeline Grill, says: “Someone phoned in and the police gathered the forces. On their way to the scene they got a tip-off about his whereabouts.”

Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, commended the quick response by police and Law Enforcement officers. “In reaction to the incident which occurred this morning, police members of Kensington police and the City’s Law Enforcement conducted a search for the suspect. The suspect was arrested at a residence in the area and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.”

The suspect is expected to appear in Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday 21 August.
