Suspect ‘stoned’

2018-01-16 06:00

Tafelsig residents have expressed their anger following the recent rape of yet another young girl.

A suspect was stoned close to death on Friday 5 January in Tafelsig when the community took matters into their own hands.

It is alleged that the man had raped a girl who lived in his street.

This incident follows a string of rapes in the area within the last month.

On Friday 1 December, a five-year-old girl was raped. With this revelation, the community demanded the suspect be handed over to them, stoning a police vehicle in the process (“‘Don’t fight like this’”, People’s Post, 5 December).

The community went on the attack again, this time on Friday 5 January, stoning ambulances and police.

Community workers called for calm and for the justice system to be allowed to take its course.

The man has since been arrested and remanded in custody.

In an unrelated incident, a man standing accused of four rapes and two murders appeared in court on Tuesday 9 January but withdrew his bail application midway through.

His case has been postponed to February.
