Suspects in court for drugs and firearms

Waheeb Albertus and Connor Eston from the Vygieskraal Informal Settlement in Athlone appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s court on Tuesday 14 January on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“This is one of the successes that the Athlone police had the first two weeks of 2020 and this year we have zero tolerance for drug dealers and unlicensed firearms. The arrest was executed with a search warrant,” says Sgt Zita Norman, spokesperson for the Athlone Police Station.

The firearms in question were one silver 38 special firearm, a 9mm pistol firearm and a 357 Magnum with six rounds, as well as 113 rounds.

On New Year’s Day (Wednesday 1 January) Hamish Mrish was arrested in Ruby Crescent, Vygieskraal, for the dealing and possession of drugs.

“We found 372 units of heroin, three bags of uncut heroin weighing 117 grams and the cash value was R14 506.90. He appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s court,” she says.

In another incident Jerome Phillips was arrested for possession of 61 Mandrax tablets and Calvin April for possession of tik and the possession of a dangerous weapon.

“April had two packets of tik and a dangerous weapon in his possession at the time of his arrest,” Norman says.
