Sweet inspiration

2017-10-24 06:00

Pretty frosting, decadent desserts, cupcakes and secret ingredients will be taking the cake at Vangate Mall on Saturday as five home cooks square off in the finals of the Sweet Sensations competition.

Riedwaan Khan, Mahjabeen Khan, Aziza Ballim, Haseena Ahmed and Faldela Paker will have to impress the judges in three 30-minute rounds with their cake-decorating skills, their ability to create a dessert of their choice and a sweet treat with the secret ingredient as its hero.

For the cherry on top, representatives of People’s Post (print media partner), Voice of the Cape (radio partner) and Vangate Mall will be challenging each other in a cupcake eating contest.

There will also be spot prizes for the public.

The fun starts Saturday at 10:30 on the Vangate Mall piazza.

People’s Post spoke to the finalists to find out what inspires them in the kitchen.

Riedwaan Khan: “I love watching cooking shows. I watch shows like Cake Boss, Kitchen Nightmares and through what I watch I’m also inspired to try a new dish.”

Mahjabeen Khan: “I just enjoy being in the kitchen cooking for my family. I feel like the kitchen is my happy space and each time I’m there I’m inspired to try something new every time. Most of my desserts are inspired by Nigella’s recipes as well.”

Aziza Ballim: “My inspiration comes from my mother. She used to love baking and cooking, so since we were young we also enjoyed it as we would help her a lot. I also think it has always been in the family so we just learnt to do it. I also watch a lot of cooking shows and follow cooking pins on Pinterest to get new ideas.”

Haseena Ahmed: “My inspiration comes from my mother. She used to have a lot of baking and cooking books and I was also interested since I was small. I baked my first cake when I was nine years old. Since then I have been baking all the time. I believe it’s a passion for me and it makes me destress.”

People’s Post couldn't get hold of Faldela Parker at the time of going to print.
