Police have arrested a man in connection with illegal firearm posession in Tafelsig.

On Friday 22 July, at 22:50, the Mitchell’s Plain Crime Prevention Unit received a complaint of a firearm being kept a premises in Lebombo Street.

On searching the premises police found a 303 hunting rifle hidden under a mattress.

The rifle was wrapped in cellotape.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Mitchell’s Plain police station commander Brigadier Cass Goolam wishes to thank the community for their assistance in this matter.

“Many innocent people are killed every year in gun-related incidents. We want to urge people to report illegal firearms and we want to encourage firearm owners to practise responsible firearm ownership. Firearms must be stored in a safe. Ensure that you know where the key is. Keep the pin code of the safe confidential.”
