Take a peek at planned skatepark

City of Cape Town officials invite residents to an open day for the construction of a skatepark.

Residents will be informed about the details of the skateboarding project in the community hall tomorrow.

The facility will be located on the eastern side of the Woodstock town hall park along Victoria Road, between Plein and Aberdeen streets.

The construction is expected to cost about R634 000 and start in January next year. It would reportedly take from three to four months to complete.

It will be run under the City’s transport and urban development authority and is aimed at creating a safe skateboarding space for residents.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says: “I encourage residents and the local skateboarder community of Woodstock to attend the open day. The construction period is not long, but there will be limited parking at the town hall during this time, and the work will affect the traffic along Plein Street.

“We are looking forward to getting going, and I am sure that the local skateboarders feel the same.”

According to the City’s statement, a proposal for the skatepark emerged as part of the World Design Capital co-design ward project in 2014, with locals and the skateboard fraternity participating in discussions about the revitalisation of the town hall area.
