A Grade 4 learner from Constantia is on a mission to help the homeless this winter by donating shoes to them.

Rubi Nates (10) is collecting shoes to donate. Her wish is to collect a 1001 pairs in all sizes.

“When I thought about the idea, I thought it was too big for me. However, I set myself a challenge and I want to help those who don’t have shoes. I like to inspire and help people, so by doing this I know I will change someone’s life,” she says.

Nates is no stranger to helping others.

“I have worked in a lot of charities and at home we like to help others, so every Christmas we make sandwiches and drive around the area giving to the homeless. When I help others it really makes me happy,” she says.

Sometime last year she worked with her mother at a charity store. Though she thought there was more than enough items to give away, many people who came had to leave without shoes.

“I noticed we had enough clothes but we didn’t have as many shoes. Some of the men who were really desperate had to take shoes for women which were purple or pink. I remember one man came to us and said his life was coming together, all he need was a pair of shoes. He had just got a job and had clothes, but unfortunately all the shoes were finished. That hit home so much and I knew from there that I had to do something,” says Nates.

Her first target was 200 but she noticed many more people need help.

“I want to make a difference. We are also appealing for socks for those that can help. We have over 200 shoes and I am willing to push hard to reach my target.

“As soon as we hit just over 500 we will start donating them to different people or organisations that need help. We haven’t thought it through who we are going to donate to but we will be giving out each and every pair,” says Nates.

Her mother Janene says she is proud of her daughter.

“She has always wanted to help. I’m so happy and she is committed to this. We have been blown away by the support of complete strangers. The words of encouragement have been phenomenal. We are asking for people everywhere to help us reach the target.”

Readers who want to donate can contact Janene on 083 275 5577 or natesfamsa@gmail.com.
