Talented youth take back streets

2017-06-13 06:01

As part of the ‘I love Lavender Hill year’, the Guardians of the National Treasure (GNT) took to the streets of Lavender Hill on Saturday 3 June in an effort to take back their streets.

GNT – an umbrella body for all community-based organisations – partnered with the Department of Community Safety under the “Dancing is there to stay, drugging ain’t the way”.

The march and event was organised by Ralph Bouwers who will be working in Lavender Hill to bring about change in the lives of the young and vulnerable.

Sport and recreation will be this year’s priority to ensure that children, especially boys, are ready for adulthood.

A soccer league will be started for u.16 boys as a means to dilute the recruitment pool for social ills, especially drugs and gangsterism, says Bouwers.

“We will bring culture back and stimulate community pride. Culture makes a community and we want our culture back. Lavender Hill has amazing young talent when it comes to sport and we aim to highlight exactly that.

“We realise the need for managerial structure and for leadership with long term vision in Lavender Hill. Our five year plan will bring about the change we want for our troubled community.”
