Tantasport faced Kenfac Phillies in the opening match of the new season of the Cape Town Softball Association league.

The team from Grassy Park recorded the first win of the season by beating Phillies 46-6 at Turfhall sports complex on Saturday.

The match started out evenly, with both teams battling to put runs on the board in the first three innings.

However, the game was tipped by the determination and courage from Phillies, who managed to break the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring six runs.

Former Glenthorn A’s player Carly Mulder stepped up to the plate and brought in three Phillies runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Despite game jitters, Tantasport fought back in the top of the fifth inning by scoring four runs, with Justine Steward adding on two of the four runs with an automatic home run. In the bottom of the fifth Phillies were unsuccessful in scoring runs. Phillies had bases loaded with one out, but the tight defence of Tantasport left them scoreless yet again, With the score remaining 6-4 in the sixth inning, it took fearlessness from Tantasport to pull out all the stops and secure a win with 10 runs.

“In the seventh inning Tantasport started creating chances and hitting the ball around the park, which saw us come from behind to seal the victory with 10 runs,” says Denver Anthony, head coach of Tantasport.

At the bottom of the seventh inning, Phillies failed to get any batters on base, which left them defeated. Even though Phillies lost their first game, former Falcons coach Andre Alexander feels optimistic about his team’s potential this season.

“Although we lost, this was a great game opener between young, aspiring teams looking to establish themselves in the top four this season after being the whipping girls last season,” says Alexander.

With Tantasport’s first win of the season, Anthony also feels optimistic about his team’s chances this season.

“I felt very proud of the team as they showed a fighting spirit by not giving up. It showed me that they are more than ready for the season ahead and it also gives us a good idea of what we are capable of doing. Phillies really put the team through the running mill, but the team showed character and mental and physical stability,” he adds.

Top batters for Tantasport were Kathryn van Boom (getting 4/5 hits), Roxanne Albertyn (3/5) and Nawaal Nacerodien (2/4).
