A minibus taxi driver was shot dead in his taxi in Steenberg last Thursday.

Robyn Wayde (31) from Grassy Park was shot by two men who had apparently boarded his taxi pretending to be passengers.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says Steenberg police officers responded to the shooting on the corner of Sonata Street and Joe Marks Boulevard.

“On their arrival they found a white Toyota Hiace taxi with the deceased inside. It is alleged that the victim was driving down Sonata Street towards Joe Marks Boulevard.

“It is further alleged that the driver picked up two male passengers in Sonata Street. While he was driving one of the men sat in front and took a firearm and shot the driver in the head and left shoulder. After the shooting the men ran away in the direction of Sonata Street.

“Paramedics declared the driver dead. The deceased was identified on the scene by his father as Wayde. Five cartridges were found on the scene.

“The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made,” he says.

V Anyone with information on the murder should call detective Sergeant Marc Lucas of the Steenberg police on 021 702 900.
