Tea almost brewing for visitors in Nantes Park

The finalisation of the lease agreement for the vacant tea room at Nantes Park is underway, with a final report expected to be submitted in the new year.

Officials of the City of Cape Town’s parks and recreation department engaged with various stakeholders in the last month and reported back at a recent subcouncil meeting. They said that although the identities of the prospective tenants could not be made public, the process of finalising the lease was underway.

“I needed to engage with the two potential vendors and the neighbourhood watch, in conjunction with councillor [Rashid] Adams. Adams is going to guide me in terms of who the correct and delegated person in the neighbourhood watch is. An idea is to have the neighbourhood watch on site as a partner which should relieve the security burden, while taking care of vandalism and other antisocial things,” said the City’s Jacques Cedras.

Cedras added that there had been a meeting between his department and two groups of people who were interested. One was a registered vendor of the City.

“They are very keen, because they almost wanted to start immediately. We have identified them, they are available and willing. They do have the skills. The next step now is to facilitate and do the administrative part – the paperwork,” he said.

Adams said he was elated that this long-standing issue could finally move to a final stage. “I am just very happy that we are at this point of finality. I look forward to the tea room being used for its intended purpose,” said Adams.

Subcouncil 17 PR representative Garrin Cavanagh agreed: “We are very happy that this has come to finality as well. It has been a long, protracted debate and we just want to see the first cup of tea being had by us. We will take guidance from Cedras, to say when the vendors are in the room and when we can go there and celebrate the opening of the tea room.”
