Police are urging residents to work with the neighbourhood watch after the rape and assault of a 16-year-old girl. According to Constable Carol Strauss of the Grassy Park police, the mentally disabled girl was lured from Buck Road Primary School in Grassy Park all the way to the Phumlani area.

“On Saturday 1 July the mentally challenged child went to the shop at about 11:00 and only returned home the following day at 23:00. The victim’s parents noticed that something had happened to her,” she explains. “Later in the week [it] came to light that she had been gang raped by three men known to her. These men, according to her, had raped her from the time she left home until the following night, after they intoxicated her with drugs.”

Two suspects have been arrested and it is expted a third suspect will be arrested soon.

“It is really shocking to think people in our community can do things like this to a mentally challenged child. Who in their right mind embarks on such evil? Grassy Park police are on their feet to ensure that the community is safe, and the assistance of parents and various community leaders will help us in fighting crimes against women and children,” Strauss adds.

V Anyone with more information on the rape of the 16-year-old girl can call Grassy Park police on 021 700 3940.
