Teen killed in gang crossfire on his way to shop

Crossfire between two rival gangs has claimed another young life in Eastridge.

Last week, a 14-year-old boy was shot in Olive Street.

At around 20:45 on Saturday 5 May, police attended to a complaint of a shooting and found two victims in the street.

The 14-year-old boy and a 48-year-old woman had sustained shots separately.

The boy had sustained a shot to the head, while the woman had been shot in the arm.

It is alleged that suspects fired randomly in the street and the victims were innocent bystanders and not affiliated to any gangs.

The boy was on his way to a shop and the woman was walking in the street when the suspects opened fire.

Both were taken to hospital and the boy was later transported to Groote Schuur Hospital where he was in a critical condition.

He later died from his injuries.

Police initially opened two cases of attempted murder. “The motive for the shooting is gang related because of ongoing fights between [rival] gangs,” the police say in a statement.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man. The suspect faces a charge of murder and attempted murder. He is expected to appear in court soon.”

V Anyone with information is asked to call the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Spencer Fillis, on 082 777 8076.
