Learners at a school in Lavender Hill were greeted to a gruesome crime scene as they arrived at school last Wednesday.
Steenberg police officers responded to a complaint of a killing at around 05:30 on the corner of Grindal Avenue and Princes George Drive, Lavender Hill.
Steenberg police spokesperson, Warrant Officer John Bartlett, says that on arrival, officers found the body of a teenager lying on the pavement.
“The deceased was naked and only had on black socks and he was covered in blood. A light blue mountain bicycle was lying in the road and a pair of Nike takkies, a golf cap and a bloodstained knife were lying next to the deceased. On the other side of the road lay an imitation firearm. There were also bloodstains on the road and pavement,” he says.
Bartlett says at this stage the circumstances and the motive for the killing are unknown. “The deceased is 17-year-old Liam Veldsman from Lavender Hill. It is alleged that the deceased was affiliated to the Fastguns gang. A case of murder has been opened for investigation.”
The principal of the school arranged trauma counselling for the learners affected by the incident.
