A teenager from Lavender hill is facing charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, discharging a firearm in a public place, illegal possession of ammunition and possession of a prohibited firearm after he was arrested last Tuesday.

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested by Steenberg police officers who were busy with crime prevention patrols in St Christopher Street, Lavender Hill.

While on patrol, officers heard gunshots going off in the vicinity of St Boniface Road.

Steenberg police spokesperson, Warrant Officer John Bartlett, says that when the officers heard the gunshots, they ran in the direction of the sound.

“They saw an unknown man running with an object in his hand that resembled a firearm. The suspect ran into a yard in St Bonaventure Street,” he says.

“The suspect was seen throwing the firearm onto the roof and the members apprehended the suspect who tried to hide in the ceiling. The officers climbed onto the roof and found a black Z88 9mm Parabellum firearm with one magazine and nine 9mm rounds of ammunition. The serial number of the firearm had been filed off.”

The suspect appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

V Anyone with information on illegal activities is asked to contact the Steenberg police on 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
