A 16-year-old boy from Walton Road in Lavender Hill was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition last Monday.He appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court the next day.Sergeant Velile Matinise and Constable Mncedi Zele of Steenberg police station were busy with crime prevention patrols in Lavender Hill when they heard gunshots at about 12:20 on the day of his arrest. They went in the direction of where the gunshots were coming from. As the officers got out of their car, a group of people ran towards them, says Warrant Officer John Bartlett, spokesperson of Steenberg police. “The officers saw a young man running with a firearm in his hand. The suspect was ordered to stop and to drop the firearm. “When the suspect was approached, he dropped the firearm and began to run away and the police officers chased after him. Matinise picked up the firearm and gave chase and caught the suspect.”“The firearm is a black Taurus 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off. “He was arrested on the spot,” says Bartlett.Colonel Jan Alexander, commander of Steenberg Police Station, says Steenberg officers will continue with their zero-tolerance approach to fighting crime, especially firearm and gang-related incidents. He has congratulated the officers for the diligent way in which they handled this matter.
