The temporary shelter housed at the Strandfontein sports field may be open for three months if not longer.

Mayor Dan Plato says while the lockdown is set out for a short 21 days, they have planned for all eventualities.

"I am not a medicalist (sic), but our medical advisors say the situation could be much different in a few months," he says.

"It will not be good to put together this monster for (only) a short time."

The site houses more than 1400 people with space for around 400 more.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith says the occupants are free to leave but may face arrest or prosecution should they be in contravention of the act.
