Theft ‘disrespectful’

2016-01-12 06:00

A recent spate of thefts has seen flowers, left by the bereaved, stolen directly off graves in local cemeteries.

Last month, a man was caught in the act of stealing flowers off a grave at the Plumstead cemetery after mourners had left.

He was apprehended and taken into custody and has been charged with theft, says Belinda Walker, the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

“We can confirm that this is not an isolated incident as there have been a number of such incidents, where flowers are being stolen off the graves as soon as the mourners leave the cemetery.

“There is no excuse for such disrespectful behaviour, which we strongly condemn,” she says.

The City will have zero tolerance for “such disrespectful and inconsiderate behaviour”, Walker says.

“We are planning on erecting signage at our cemeteries to warn potential perpetrators that stealing flowers from gravesites is a criminal offence that will result in their prosecution.

“I ask members of the public to be our eyes and ears on the ground and to work in collaboration with us to bring these wanton criminals to book,” she says.

V Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior or incidents to the law enforcement department on 0800 225 669, metro police on 0860 765 423 or their local police station.
